Home-Start Newcastle Borough
Family Support Worker
Home-Start Newcastle Borough is a charity that offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children in Newcastle Borough.
Home-Start offers a unique service. We recruit and train volunteers – who are usually parents themselves – to visit families at home who have at least one child under 5 and offer them informal, friendly and confidential support.
To help give children the best possible start in life, Home-Start supports parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children and widen their links with the local community.
The Home-Start Approach
To Home-Start every family is special and we respond to each family’s needs through a combination of home-visiting support, group work and social events.
Home-Start schemes are rooted in the communities they serve. They are managed locally but supported by the national organisation. This offers direction, training, information and guidance to schemes and ensures consistent and quality support for parents and children wherever they are.
The Local Picture and Staff Team
Home-Start Newcastle Borough was established in August 1997. To date, families have been supported largely by home-visiting volunteers and support is not time-limited. In the last year the scheme supported over 60 families across the district with home visiting support. The majority of volunteers are home-visiting volunteers, but volunteers also assist with administrative work and fundraising.
The scheme employs three co-ordinators responsible for recruiting, training and matching volunteers and for assessing the needs of families.
Family Support Worker Role
The Family Support Worker Post will be working on our contract with Staffordshire County Council to provide family support through home visiting and outreach under the Children’s Centre Framework. Contracts are initially for a 12 month period only.
Family Services Engagement Worker
The Family Services Engagement Worker will conduct proactive home visits to families living within the 0-30% most deprived areas within Newcastle Borough. The purpose of these visits will be to engage families with universal services where possible and identify the need for family support at an early stage before issues escalate further. The visits will also enable targeted promotion of Think2 childcare places to potentially eligible families.
Each eligible family will be offered up to two visits as follows:
When a child is aged between 5-8 months old
When a child is aged between 13–22 months old conduct some follow up work
These are key times when families are not necessarily receiving support from universal services such as Health Visitors. Not all of the families will require ongoing support, as some will only require information, advice and guidance. Those families needing additional support will then be referred into Home-Start’s Referral Based Family Support service. If the needs of the family are multiple and complex the families will be referred to the Local Support Teams
The post holder will liaise with the Early Years Coordination Service to provide details of families visited. The post holder will (in liaison with the Early Years Coordination Service) set up packs to take to families visited with information about local provision for families (eg: Children’s Centre Group provision, Toddler Groups etc). It is also envisaged that some liaison with Health Visitors will need to take place to ensure that families are encouraged to take up proactive visits and permissions given to share information. Experience of such partnership working and of local services is therefore desirable.
The post holder will also be required to deliver Bookstart sessions with families on a one to one basis in the family home to help promote and support early learning and education in the home. Training will be provided.
